Description

Position Title: Central Sterile Tech / Scrub Tech

Department: Surgical Services

Supervisor Title: Surgical Services Manager

I. Position Summary:

A. Central Sterile Tech: Receives and processes incoming sterile supplies and equipment, performs cleaning and sterilizing duties, prepares packs of supplies, linens and instruments in Central Supply as needed.

B. OR Scrub Tech/OR Scrub Nurse: Prepares operating rooms for surgery, using appropriate techniques. Provides technical services and assists the surgical team before, during and after surgery, as assigned and directed, in accordance with approved methods and techniques.

II. Principle Functions and Responsibilities:

A. Central Sterile Tech:

  • Assists in ordering supplies for the OR and Central Sterile.

  • Decontaminates instruments, supplies and equipment according to established policies and procedures.

  • Cleans, assembles, wraps, sterilizes, and stores sterile supplies and instrument trays. Distributes sterile supplies and equipment to units in a timely fashion.

  • Maintains an adequate supply of packs and sterile supplies to meet area needs including inventory control, proper labeling, and labeling of packages.

  • Performs biological and chemical monitoring in accordance with quality assurance standards.

  • Sterilizes instruments, equipment and supplies as required; handles and stores instruments, equipment, and sterile supplies appropriately.

  • Maintains the cleanliness of work areas as required.

  • Takes personal responsibility for being proficient and aware of current standards in Central Supply technology. Attends in-house in service and attends out-of-house in services when made available.

  • Serves as a resource to other units.

  • Fosters good public relations for Central Supply, the Nursing Department, and the hospital.

  • Shall perform all administrative, clerical, and other duties that are required or assigned by regulatory agencies, insurance carriers or administration.

  • Attends meetings as required.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

B. Scrub Tech:

  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.

  • Maintains good relationships with Supply Chain Manager and vendors to ensure supplies are available the day before surgery.

  • Places equipment and supplies in operating room and arranges instruments, according to instructions. Assures that all equipment and protocols are in place to support all procedures.

  • Hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs other tasks as directed by surgeon during operation. Assures that a sterile field is maintained.

  • Puts dressings on patient following surgery.

  • Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after operation.

  • Washes and sterilizes equipment.

  • Collaborates with team ensuring OR is ready for next use.

  • Keeps physicians’ preference cards updated.

  • Keeps unit updated as to new surgical procedures or changes.

  • Maintains billing and implant tracking, collaborating with other managers and vendors.

  • Takes personal responsibility for being proficient and aware of current standards of practice in operating room nursing and technology practice. Attends in-house in service, nursing meetings, reads professional journals, attends out-of- house in services when available.

  • Serves as a resource to team and other units.

  • Fosters good public relations for the Operating Room, the Nursing Department, and the organization.

  • Shall perform all administrative, clerical, and other duties that are required or assigned by regulatory agencies, insurance carriers or administration.

  • The employee will maintain positive and effective relations with co-workers, other departments, patients, and visitors.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or requested.

  • Trains staff as needed for cross training

Requirements

Position Qualification/Requirements:

A. Minimum Education: Scrub Technician

  • Certification as a surgical technologist preferred, or similar experience in practical nursing or an operating room with ability to gain certification.

  • Current Basic Life Support Certification or obtained within 6 months.

B. Minimum Experience and Skills:

  • One to two years of experience working in an Operating Room as a Scrub Nurse or Technician. Certification as a surgical technologist preferred, or similar experience in an operating room

  • Registered Nurse scrub techs must have an unencumbered license in IDAHO.

  • Must have a thorough knowledge of Infection Control, Sterile Technique, and Anatomy and Physiology.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operation and maintenance of equipment and inventory located in the operating room

  • Continuing in-services and educations program required

  • Current Basic Life Support certificate required

  • Physical Requirements: Extensive walking, standing. Lifting, positioning, pushing and/or transferring of patients.

  • Ability to interact comfortably with a patients, families, and staff in a stressful environment

  • Central Sterile: High School Diploma, will train, experience is preferred. Will train, experience is preferred
