Industrial Hygienist Technician

Job Description Summary:

The Industrial Hygienist Technician provides the full spectrum of industrial hygienist support to the United States Coast Guard (USCG) Aviation Logistics Center (ALC) Technical Support Services (TSS) contract in Elizabeth City, NC. ALC provides logistics and depot maintenance support to all U.S. Coast Guard aviation assets including the HC-27J Spartan, HC-144 Ocean Sentry, HC-130 H/J Hercules, MH-60T Jayhawk, and MH-65D/E Dolphin.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the development of intervention programs aimed at providing lasting solutions to problems experienced to reduce health and safety risks by collecting data in workspaces at ALC.

  • Perform required quarterly and customer requested industrial hygiene assessments (i.e., noise, hexavalent chromium, asbestos, lead, isocyanates, etc.), write detailed technical reports, and provide recommendations to mitigate workplace hazards.

  • Evaluate work conditions and recognize potential health concerns for workers. Develop corrective measures to prevent the exposure of workers to adverse health conditions by using engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Develop and provide training on safe work practices and environmental compliance.

  • Perform inspections of work areas to ensure people are not exposed to chemical or occupational hazards such as lead, asbestos, pesticides, or unsafe equipment.

  • Assist in assessing the physical health of workers and helping to implement ergonomic upgrades to worker facilities to help reduce health care costs and improve worker efficiency and health.

  • Assist in collecting samples following recognized sampling methodologies.

  • Assist in the testing of workplaces for environmental hazards, such as exposure to radiation, chemical or biological hazards.

  • Ensure workers are properly protected and work controls are properly implemented. Maintain close communication with the Safety and Environmental Health Office (SEHO) management and workers to ensure a common goal of preventing worker exposure is maintained.

  • Prepare or calibrate equipment used to collect or analyze samples.

  • Maintain all required environmental records and documentation.

  • Assist in the development of work Health & Safety Plans and Procedures based on potential adverse health effects that may be present.

  • Investigate accidents to identify causes or to determine how such accidents might be prevented in the future.

  • Inspect or evaluate workplace environments, equipment, or practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.

  • Coordinate facility specific assessments, sample analysis plans, field data collection, and report generation working with SEHO management.

  • Effectively communicate with SEHO management, peers, or subordinates, providing information to supervisors and co-workers in written form, e-mail, or in person as appropriate for the needs of the audience.

  • Analyze information and evaluate results to choose the best solution and solve problems.

  • Assist in providing safety promotion events such as annual safety stand down, lunch training sessions, etc.

  • Assist industrial hygienists in managing the asbestos, lead, laser, respiratory, hearing conservation, and occupational medical surveillance programs.

    Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Minimum of an associate degree or related degree in safety, industrial hygiene, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, industrial safety, occupational health, environmental health, public health, or a related field plus two years relevant experience, or H.S. Diploma with four-years relevant experience in occupational safety or industrial hygiene.

  • Strong working knowledge of all OSHA regulations regarding industry, as well as previous experience carrying out monitoring and testing responsibilities related to workplace safety and environmental issues.

  • Strong computer proficiency is a must, particularly with Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to climb stairs and be on feet for extended amounts of time.
