Job Description
The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a highly motivated and organized Nursing Unit Coordinator to join the team at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora, which provides supportive counseling and behavioral health treatment for young men, ages 12-18, who were adjudicated delinquent. This is a full-time position that generally works from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday with occasional overtime opportunities during the evening or weekends if coverage is needed. This position offers opportunity for advancement, growth, and development.
The primary responsibility of the Nursing Unit Coordinator is to coordinate clinical activities and perform reception and clerical support functions to nursing and mental health departments. Some duties include:
Transcribe dictations using medical terminology from physicians in person or over telephonic or electronic medium.
Answer phones, direct calls or inquiries, and take notes from callers. Provide return calls and notifications as required or directed.
Call students to and from the clinic following proper procedures.
Assist with medication administration.
Collect data, diagnosis, care information, and other general information from various sources to organize, plot, and file student medical and psychological files both physically and electronically using approved systems.
Create the weekly agenda for the Multidisciplinary Team meeting which requires gathering pertinent information along with cross checking psychiatric and psychology mental health diagnoses. Take and finalize meeting minutes and share with involved parties.
Take minutes for Intensive Therapeutic Program meetings and document student referral information on Staffshare for reference referral date, accepted/declined, rationale for referral, discharge, or other necessary documentation.
Create and track excel reports for medical and psychology as needed.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with professional treatment staff, supervisors, and other employees.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint is highly valued in this role. Ability to type 40 words per minute NET is required.
The successful candidate will have the following skills:
Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence structure.
Ability to operate various office equipment (i.e. phones, printer, fax, transcription equip., etc.)
Ability to interpret and apply STS policies that pertain to the medical and psychology departments.
Ability to maintain accurate records and files for the facility.
Ability to take direction, multitask, and function in a high pace medical clinic while remaining professional.
Display a high level of initiative, effort, and dedication to completing assignments efficiently and excel at prioritizing requests.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
The equivalent of two years of full-time clerical work experience involving the use of medical terminology;
OR
employees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes the equivalent of one year of full-time work experience as a Resident Treatment Worker, Pharmacy Assistant or a position providing nursing care or clerical work in a state institution providing medical services shall be considered qualified.
