Job Description

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is seeking a Chaplain to join the team at the State Training School (STS) in Eldora, which provides supportive counseling and behavioral health treatment for youth, ages 12-18, who were adjudicated delinquent. This is a full-time position with flexible schedule to meet the religious needs of the students. Working some weekends and evenings will be necessary to meet those needs and to work with community volunteer members. The State Training School encourages a strong team environment, with the opportunity for professional development as a leader. Additionally, HHS and STS offer opportunities for advancement to motivated individuals.

The primary role of this position is to meet the religious needs of the students ordered to the State Training School and assist them in their spiritual growth. This includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Provide weekly chapel services.

  • Provide and organize weekly bible studies.

  • Recruit, train, and organize community volunteers.

  • Provide religious counseling to students.

  • Develop a rapport with the students.

  • Visit the students’ living units.

  • Assist the students in religious transition planning.

  • Evaluate and assess the students’ religious needs and make religious accommodations as deemed necessary.

  • Plan and facilitate religious groups.

  • Attend meetings as necessary.

  • Complete all required trainings.

  • Additional duties, when necessary.

Evidence demonstrating the authorization to perform ministerial functions within their religious denomination is required of the successful candidate.

STS offers a holistic social, behavioral, psychiatric, academic, and secure environment with vocational program that utilizes counseling, treatment, and consequences paired with praise, incentives, and opportunity. Services and programs provide individualized evaluation and treatment along with opportunity in the form of educational, vocational, social, and recreational programs. Transitional services are provided by STS staff as well as contract staff to maximize each student’s chances for success upon return to their community. The onsite school operates all year, giving youth the opportunity to graduate during their stay.

Working at STS comes with a special perk! This location offers access for staff to the impressive on-campus gym during off student hours. This includes 3 full size basketball courts, two fully stocked weight rooms with machine and free weights, showers, and lockers. We also provide a cardio roomfor staff onlyfeaturing exercise mats and advanced treadmills and stationary bikes. Usage of these resources is completely free for all STS staff.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in a social/behavioral science that includes a minimum of twenty (20) semester hours of coursework in Pastoral Psychology/Pastoral Counseling;

OR

graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's Degree in Divinity;

OR

experience equal to one year of full-time work as an institutional chaplain, licensed or ordained minister, or other credentialed pastoral/ministerial position.
