Principal Financial Group Sr Retirement Benefit Analyst in Des Moines, Iowa

What You'll Do

We’re looking for a Retirement Benefit Analyst to join our Calculation Policy Team. In this role, you’ll analyze, research, and consult on benefit calculation issues for large and complex defined benefit pension plans. You'll bring leadership savvy and technical expertise for projects involving coordination between departments!

You'll have the opportunity to:

  • Work with a dedicated team to onboard new defined benefit plans that are moving to Principal

  • Analyze and understand pension plan documents and benefit calculations performed by others

  • Coordinate with the plan sponsor, legal counsel, and outside administrators to fully understand and document all aspects of benefit calculations

  • Proactively solve problems and suggest solutions as they arise

  • Provide expert knowledge related to benefit calculations and clearly communicate technical benefit calculations in simple terms to internal and external partners

  • Provide pension technical assistance to business partners involving research, calculation expertise and analysis, and solving questions and problems

  • Identify efficiencies and propose solutions to implement those efficiencies

  • Contribute to the continued improvement and growth of the defined benefit practice through collaboration, mentoring, and development

Who You Are

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent of 8 years’ experience required. (Degree in Math, Actuarial Science, Statistics, or major in an analytical field is preferred.)

  • 5+ years of work-related experience in defined benefit pension field required.

  • Ability to interpret complex plan provisions.

  • Ability to handle a heavy workload and prioritize to meet deadlines.

  • High integrity and discretion to ensure the confidentiality of sensitive client data.

  • Strong understanding all regulatory items that affect participant calculations is vital to ensure administrative system calculations are accurate.

Preferred skills:

  • High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel and other Microsoft Office applications.

  • Defined benefit actuarial experience is a preferred; Enrolled Actuary designation is a plus.

Job Level

We’ll consider talent at the Retirement Benefit Analyst V, Sr. Retirement Benefit Analyst I, and Sr. Retirement Benefit Analyst II levels with the right experiences and skills. Note: the qualifications listed above are the minimum qualifications for the Retirement Benefit Analyst V.

Salary Range Information

Salary ranges below reflect targeted base salaries. Non-sales positions have the opportunity to participate in a bonus program. Sales positions are eligible for sales incentives, and in some instances a bonus plan, whereby total compensation may far exceed base salary depending on individual performance. Actual compensation for all roles will be based upon geographic location, work experience, education, licensure requirements and/or skill level and will be finalized at the time of offer.

Salary Range (Non-Exempt expressed as hourly; Exempt expressed as yearly)

$63750 - $182400 / year

Time Off Program

Flexible Time Off (FTO) is provided to salaried (exempt) employees and provides the opportunity to take time away from the office with pay for vacation, personal or short-term illness. Employees don’t accrue a bank of time off under FTO and there is no set number of days provided.

Work Environments

This role offers in-office, hybrid (blending at least three office days in a typical workweek), and remote work arrangements (only if residing more than 30 miles from Des Moines, IA, or Charlotte, NC). You’ll work with your leader to figure out which option may align best based on several factors.
