Job Description:
Duties/Responsibilities
Possesses the knowledge and skill to work with and collect blood specimens with little or no difficulties from infants, preschool, school age, adolescents and adults, who may have disabilities, both mental and physical.
Assists and educates others with proper venipuncture techniques.
Orients volunteers and other phlebotomists to the area.
Assures all supplies are readily available for phlebotomy.
Coordinates phlebotomy and volunteer activities.
Explain blood draw procedure to patients and answer questions about the process.
Communicate effectively with children, their parents, and co-workers during anxiety producing activities; hand and finger dexterity and strength to hold equipment and patients effectively.
Ability to grasp, pull, lift, or move children into proper positions.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Must be able to perform repetitive motions, to reach for items, and to move quickly when needed.
Will be able to receive and complete computer-generated orders.
Verify patient information and label blood samples properly
Reading skills and medical terminology are necessary.
Need ability to determine if time and amount of blood draw procedure is appropriate for age and weight of patient as well as for the order, and appropriate materials to use.
Required Skills/Abilities
High school degree or equivalent required.
Phlebotomy certification required.
A minimum of two years experience and training in phlebotomy techniques in a hospital or clinic setting with children required.
Familiarity with medical terminology necessary.
