Indian Health Service Dental Hygienist - DE in Crownpoint, New Mexico

Summary Dental Hygienist for the Crownpoint Service Unit, Division of Clinical Services, Dental Department in Crownpoint, New Mexico. The purpose of this position is to plan and administer the preventive dentistry program, providing comprehensive oral health education and dental hygiene treatment to diverse patient groups with assistance from members of the dental service. Responsibilities Completes preliminary examinations on new dental service patients. Record and review patient medical history. Examines the teeth and periodontium for evidence of plaque and periodontal disease. Prepares dental hygiene treatment plans for patients including assessment of the problem. Develops and interprets routine X-Rays to identify tooth structures, calculus, and abnormalities such as cavities, traumatic occlusion. Assists the dentist by making repairs and adjustments to teeth. Instructs patients at chairside in oral hygiene, brushing and flossing techniques, and periodontal aids which increase the amount of stimulation to the periodontium. Chart conditions of decay and disease for diagnosis and treatment by dentist. Provide clinical services or health education to improve and maintain the oral health of patients. Apply fluorides or other cavity preventing agents to arrest dental decay. Administer local anesthetic agents. Remove excess cement from coronal surfaces of teeth. Conduct dental health clinics for community groups to augment services of dentist. Research current dental literature and regularly attends hospital and dental staff meetings to make improvements in the oral hygiene program. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Licensure: Applicants must be currently licensed to practice as dental hygienists in a State or territory of the United States or the District of Columbia. NOTE: Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 CFR Part 75. Essentially, they must (1) have successfully completed an educational program that meets or exceeds the standards described in that regulation, and is accredited by an organization recognized by the Department of Education, and (2) be certified as radiographers in their field. The following meet these requirements: (1) Persons employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel prior to the effective date of the regulation (January 13, 1986) who show evidence of current or fully satisfactory performance or certification of such from a licensed practitioner such as a doctor of medicine, osteopathy, dentistry, podiatry, or chiropractic who prescribes radiologic procedures to others. (2) Persons first employed by the Federal Government as radiologic personnel after the effective date of the regulation who (a) received training from institutions in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not accredit training in that particular field at the time of graduation, or (b) practiced in a State or foreign jurisdiction that did not license that particular field or did not allow special eligibility to take a licensure examination for those who did not graduate from an accredited educational program, provided that such persons show evidence of training, experience, and competence as determined by the employing agency. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: GS-08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: examining and assessing patients, determining if systemic conditions are present and plan treatments; independently and without direct observation perform oral prophylaxis and provide therapeutic care, performing deep scaling, root planning and subgingival curettage, placing temporary fillings and administering local anesthesia, placing and removing rubber dams and applying sealant; providing oral health education services to individuals and groups; taking, developing, and interpreting intraoral and extraoral x-rays. Includes experience in community health in preparing and conducting educational lectures and demonstrations on dental hygiene, planning public health programs, providing advice and policy guidance to dental personnel on public health matters, and recommending improved methods of dental hygiene. **Note: Applicants will be referred periodically throughout the year until all positions are filled.
