Position Purpose

Glass Melt Technician supporting all glass projects within the corporation. This role provides process understanding to help solve process problems particularly in support of glass melting research. Provides support in testing proof of concept/feasibility for new processes or capability improvement of existing processes. Supports projects by improving processes and solving problems based on fundamental understanding gained through the use of the scientific method as well as melting knowledge. Work with others to investigate process alternatives and down select based on the technical fundamentals. Position requires lab work for glass melting, building lab-scale process tools, and support of glass scientists.

Requirements

  • 2-year degree in technical field and 1 year of related experience

  • Creative/innovative problem-solving skills unique to glass melting and process understanding

  • Understands and follows the Scientific Method

  • Comfortable working around high temperature furnaces for extended periods of time

  • Able to effectively work within the ever changing and dynamic work environment associated with research projects

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, formulas, graphing, etc. and Microsoft Word and PowerPoint

  • Ability to write and follow an SOP for lab experiments and equipment use

  • Able to work with a variety of lab equipment such as furnaces, annealers, core drill, wet saw, and grinding equipment

Desired

  • Experience in conducting experiments, recording/tracking data in a laboratory environment, eye for details, ability to conduct multiple experiments exactly the same

  • General knowledge of Corning organization and processes and business systems

  • Some level of mechanical and electrical aptitude/equipment understanding

  • Ability to build relationships across functional groups

  • Familiarity with various types of microscopes

Responsibilities

  • Conduct hands on work in a laboratory environment

  • Maintaining contacts with groups outside of RD&E to facilitate problem identification and solutions

  • Maintaining labs, process equipment, and lab materials through approved purchasing methods

  • Prepare samples for analysis, including cutting, grinding, etc.

  • Organize and submit samples for characterization and organize results

  • Document work and generate IP as appropriate

  • Record and analyze process data using statistics

  • Communicate project status and updates to work group

The range for this position is $56,284.00 - $77,391.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position are dependent on hours worked and may include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, pension plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, and PTO.
