CITY OF COLUMBUS
Division of Water (Watershed) – Equipment Operator I
The Division of Water (Watershed), City of Columbus, is accepting applications for (2) Equipment Operator I position at our Hoover and Griggs locations. The schedule will be Monday-Friday, 7:00 am- 3:30 pm. To qualify, you must possess a valid Class A OR Class B commercial motor vehicle operator's license allowing the operation of vehicles with air brakes. Some positions MAY require the following endorsement(s): Passenger Transport (P), Hazardous Materials (H), Tanker (N) and tank vehicles transporting hazardous materials (X). These positions are essential to Watershed in maintaining reservoirs and facilities by operating tractors, mowers, large trucks and boats. Seasonally these positions may assist in salting and snow removal as part of a 24-hour operation to keep Distribution main line water leaks from freezing. Equipment used in this position includes: tractors, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, pickup truck, chippers, and chain saws. Under general supervision, is responsible for the operation of a variety of motorized equipment involving moderately difficult problems of operation; performs related tasks as required.
Examples of Work
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Operates light, industrial-type tractors and trucks using front-end loader attachments;
Operates tandem and single axle dump trucks;
Operates power rodder equipment and/or hydraulic jet equipment to clean out sewer lines;
Operates steel roller and rubber tire roller equipment;
Operates light-duty tow trucks and regular and rollback wreckers;
Operates various types of equipment such as street flushers, farm-type tractors with mowers or other attachments, 2,000-gallon gasoline delivery trucks, post-hole diggers, utility watercraft, or water pumpers;
Operates excavation equipment used in the excavation of utility lines and related structures;
Operates crane in the performance of a variety of tasks such as lifting machinery, materials, and equipment;
Checks sight levels and individual controls of beams and jacks to level crane on uneven terrain;
Operates or drives other equipment as directed;
Drives commercial motor vehicles, which require a commercial driver’s license, and transports equipment;
Checks equipment for proper levels and amounts of various fluids and other critical materials such as crankcase oil, water, air in tires, and brake fluids;
Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as changing or filling oil, changing hydraulic filters, and lubricating or greasing parts;
Prepares operator’s daily vehicle report noting conditions of various operating systems and levels and amounts of important fluids or other materials;
Cleans vehicles and equipment after use;
Maintains records of work locations, work order numbers acted on, types and amounts of work performed, problems encountered, and number of workers needed to complete each job;
Performs hand tool maintenance work using hand tools such as a trimmer, chain saw, and pruner;
Cleans work site of debris and other stray materials;
Jumps cars and changes flat tires in order to tow vehicles;
Oversees the work of laborers or helpers on some jobs requiring work crews and/or assistance to the operator;
Assists with snow and ice removal on an as-needed basis.
Minimum Qualifications
