Global Science & Technology Coral Reef Watch Scientist in College Park, Maryland

Global Science & Technology, Inc (GST), is seeking a Coral Reef Watch Scientist to join our team, and support the development, operations, and maintenance of CRW algorithms (e.g., single-pixel virtual stations and others) and develop new CRW products. This position is located in College Park, MD, but is approved for a hybrid model of onsite and telework.

NOAA Coral Reef Watch (CRW) uses remotely sensed data to identify physical-environmental stressors that may impact marine ecosystems and resources. Specifically, CRW utilizes satellite-derived sea surface temperatures (SST) and thermal anomaly algorithms to identify when and where coral reef ecosystems are at risk for coral bleaching. Predictions of coral bleaching are utilized by reef managers, scientists, and the public to understand, document, and respond to the ever-increasing threat of marine heat waves.

This position is located in College Park, MD, but is approved for a hybrid model of onsite and telework.

Position Summary:

Prospective employees must have strong scientific credentials in oceanography, and ocean biology, and must understand remote sensing of the oceans and coastal zones, and factors affecting coral reef health. The successful candidate will work directly with the Coral Reef Watch Coordinator to ensure satisfactory completion of tasks and determination of priorities. Duties and required responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Create on-demand virtual stations based on the needs of the user community • Work with remotely sensed data, including sea surface temperatures (SSTs) • Contribute to the CRW website by using a variety of web tools and languages • Assist in collaborative efforts between CRW and other Federal and academic institutions and agencies, both domestic and international • Assist in scientific publications about the CRW program, new CRW products and techniques, etc. • Develop and update existing Coral Reef Map utilized by CRW • Understanding of remotely sensed Water Quality issues; understanding of coral reef science and health • Strong written and oral communication skills

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Scientist/Marine Biologist/Analyst with a background in marine science, physical and biological oceanography, and/or coral reef ecosystem processes desired. MS degree in science, engineering, oceanography, geoscience, etc. is strongly preferred.

• Languages such as C, C++, Java, IDL; web languages such as PHP, JavaScript • Experience with Linux environment, python, and GIS • Understanding of remotely sensed data and data formats (e.g., NetCDF)
