Case Western Reserve University Research Technician 2 in Cleveland, Ohio

POSITION OBJECTIVE Working under frequent supervision, the Research Technician 2 will conduct experiments related to diabetic retinopathy studies. This person will perform technical procedures and statistical analyses according to specific instructions/ protocols. Responsibilities include rodent modeling of diabetic retinopathy, retina cell isolation, photoreceptor cell isolation, and pathology analysis in retinal vasculature. The technician will also perform ELISA, flow cytometry, qPCR, and microscopy analyses of samples collected by supervising staff. The technician will contribute to the generating preliminary data and will be able to perform statistical analyses of data for grant submissions and publication manuscripts. Proficiency in core statistical methods and specialized skills in murine retina vasculature isolation are essential for success. This position will work with animals. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Perform technical procedures and experiments involving retina cell and vasculature isolation according to specific instructions/protocols. (15%)  2. Record, tabulate, and calculate experimental data. Work with the supervisor and other investigating staff in the lab to develop statistical strategies and perform data analyses of various ongoing experiments. (15%) 3. Perform data mining of referenced topics from the supervisor and other investigating staff to assist in background, discussion, and reference sections of new grant proposals and manuscripts. (15%) 4. Perform data management tasks, create analytic datasets that have been appropriately checked for errors, summarize data elements, and perform statistical analyses for grants and publications. (15%) 5. Perform ELISA, flow cytometry, qPCR, and microscopy analyses of retina samples. (10%) 6. Prepare reagents for ELISA, flow cytometer, and Western immunoblot assays, perform housekeeping tasks and autoclaving, and assist in animal colony maintenance. (8%) 7. Purchase routine lab supplies, collect receipts, and monitor expenditures of the lab to follow budget. (6%) 8. Enter sequences into databases; may conduct analysis of datasets and perform statistical analyses for grants and publications. (6%) 9. Extract data for follow-up and data mining of referenced topics from the supervisor and investigating staff. (6%) NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS  1. Learn new procedures as required. (2%) 2. Perform other duties as assigned. (2%) CONTACTS  Department: Continuous daily contact with the Supervisor, and other investigating research staff of the supervisor's laboratory to discuss research, provide data and data analyses, and maintain workflow. University: Occasional contact with other departmental staff in a lab meeting setting or during monthly research seminar series to share information. Monthly contact with collaborating faculty and laboratory staff from other departments in the university and of affiliate hospitals (i.e. UH and the Cleveland VA). External: Limited contact with vendors to exchange information. Students: Occasional contact with student employees to exchange information. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY  This position has no direct supervision of staff employees. QUALIFICATIONS Experience: 1 to 2 years of related experience required. Education: High school education required. REQUIRED SKILLS 1. Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the vision science field.  2. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.  3. Ability to operate laboratory equipment and software to perform ELISA, flow cytometry, qPCR, and statistical analyses. 4. Ability to meet consistent attendance. 5. Ability to interact with colleagues and supervisors face to face. 6. Must demonstrate compliance with CWRU animal research and care
