The Opportunity

Abt seeks a Principal Associate to lead domestic and international/USAID projects. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality analytical and evidence building services to clients including analyses, assessments, impact evaluations, and other analytical services. In addition, they will lead business development activities through client development, capture, proposal, and other pipeline development activities. Roles will also include project leadership through the provision of overall management, team leadership, and direction and administrative oversight on projects to ensure compliance and quality.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic managerial and technical leadership to ensure quality and timely delivery of all activities and deliverables. 

  • Liaise with clients and serve as the principal leadership and point of contact for projects.  

  • Design and plan the analysis for rigorous randomized controlled trials or quasi-experimental impact evaluations, applying advanced methods and techniques. Collaborate with peers to identify innovative research approaches.

  • Provide technical direction for large impact evaluations for federal agencies with responsibility for the technical execution of rigorous evaluations.

  • Actively engage with and build/maintain relationships with clients and partners

  • Support execution of domestic and international research account plan, including identification and capture of evaluation opportunities

  • Work closely with subject matter experts, methodologists, proposal specialists and others across Abt to develop and submit winning proposals

  • Ensure that all project staff, personnel, and subcontractors understand their roles and responsibilities and comply with client and Abt policies and procedures. 

  • Oversee the development of and adherence to technical quality standards and processes for evaluations, surveys, and analytical studies.

  • Manage the project’s operational, financial, and administrative priorities; lead planning, implementation and budgeting activities.

  • Build and maintain excellent working relationships with clients, project partners, and other key partners. Regularly coordinate project direction with clients to ensure strategic alignment, collaborative learning, and adaptation.

  • Guide project teams to accomplish the project’s strategic goals and objectives.

  • Supervise and manage staff, subcontractors, and consultants, communicate expectations for the team and delegate responsibilities as required.

  • Mentor colleagues at all levels to develop their skills and grow the next generation of leaders.

  • Support the communication of project results and outputs through academic publications, reports, policy briefs, national and international forums and other appropriate avenues.

  • Demonstrated leadership, management, and operational experience in overseeing multiple tasks and priorities at the same time, and effectively determining priority actions. This includes experience managing large-scale, national or worldwide research and analytical programs with time sensitive deliverables, as well as people management skills.

  • Professional experience leading large-scale, complex evaluations, including studies in developing country contexts.

  • Demonstrated experience developing diverse evidence translation and learning products and a commitment to helping policymakers and practitioners better utilize evidence in program design.

  • Experience developing and executing research to address learning agendas.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills; excellent demonstrated interpersonal and negotiation skills.

  • Commitment to principles of Gender Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as evidenced in previous management positions and programming.

  • Demonstrated ability to work and coordinate effectively with a wide variety of partners, including federal, state, and local governments, civil society organizations, private sector representatives, and local communities.

  • Ability to travel as required.

  • At least ten years of experience in performance and impact evaluation, research, field surveys, assessments, and other analytical tasks. This experience should include strong quantitative analysis skills.

  • Bachelor’s Degree + Fifteen years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree + Twelve years of relevant experience, or PhD + Ten years of relevant experience

This position offers an anticipated annual base salary range of approximately $139,000 to $222,000 and may vary by ten percent depending on candidate geographic location. Salary offers are made based on internal equity and market analysis.
