Job Summary

The Office of Information Technology encourages applications for a Design Engineer! This position exists to define and update design processes impacting IT Infrastructure strategic planning at the campus-level. This position acts as a domain expert related to IT Division 27 Standards and consultant for external IT designers and design review for campus projects. Uses knowledge gained from experience and industry to resolve complicated and unique challenges that arise in IT construction.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Domain Expert - Strategic Planning Project Design:

  • Review campus project documents from Feasibility to Schematic Design (SD), Design Development (DD) and Construction Documents (CD) focusing on impact projects will have on the communications cabling and pathways infrastructure. Uses a high degree of professional knowledge and understanding of campus standards in response. The review process includes detailed comments and communication from specifications to architects, consultants and facilities management project managers including RFI's and Change Orders. Problem solves unique design issues with alignment to industry standards, demonstrating sophisticated resolutions meeting project and infrastructure needs. Performs strategic and disaster contingency planning. Uses complex problem-solving to assure that knowledge skills and experience support the best recommendations available.

IT Consulting:

  • Participate in project level design meetings with contractors and campus architects, planners, mechanical, electrical, fire and utility engineers to guide campus expansion and remodeling. Administer Telecommunications specifications, reviewing and authorizing variances when requested. Regularly relied upon as a guide, resource, or advisor as a technical lead. Perform short and long-term planning and disaster contingency planning based upon the campus facilities strategy and IT infrastructure. Uses complex problem-solving to assure that knowledge skills and experience support the best recommendations available.

IT Specifications:

  • Defines and updates Division 27 Standards as posted on CU Facilities Management website. These standards provide a technical guide for installation of IT infrastructure. Provide addendums as needed in between review cycles. Follow industry trends and changes to assure that standards are updated according to technology needs and product availability. Recommends outdated standards for updating and seeks cost-effective, standards based, policies and processes.

Termination Schedule:

  • Review consultant submittals for termination schedule to assure labeling matches expected standards and design documents. Produce as needed for projects.

  • Additional Administrative Duties.

  • Includes access control for IT spaces, service vehicle maintenance including vehicles have updated insurance, registration, and gas cards.

Status meetings:

  • Participate in weekly project status meetings with internal team, contractors, and current project teams to review progress and relay issues with documents received.

What You Should Know

  • Hybrid position works normal business hours Monday - Friday. Occasional need for out of hours work related to a service incident on campus and/or special event staffing.

What We Can Offer

  • The salary range is $93,126 - $104,750 per year.

What We Require

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) from an accredited institution in telecommunications information systems, engineering or other related field. A combination of education and experience may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience which includes:

  • Conducting and understanding ANSI/TIA-568 and BICSI Telecommunication Cabling Installation standards for copper and fiber cabling.

  • Conducting and understanding copper ANSI/TIA-568 standard testing for copper cable and ANSI/TIA/EIA-526 testing for multimode and single-mode fiber optic cable.

  • Conducting and understanding ANSI/NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code for cable installation.

  • Current BICSI RCDD certification or demonstrates a willingness to acquire this certification within a 12-month period.

  • A Valid U.S. Driver's License.

  • Demonstrable ability to supervise and manage multiple tasks at the same time.

  • Highly organized and diligent approach to all work tasks and products.

  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

  • Works primarily independently under set timelines.

  • Ability to effectively connect with campus constituents about specific and complex topics.

  • Technical lead on inside and outside infrastructure cabling.
