Job Introduction

The primary focus of this position will be to collect biological data on Burbot and other native species in the Kootenai basin. Work will be conducted on the mainstem Kootenai River in both Idaho and southern British Columbia. Most time will be spent sampling with hoop nets and the remaining time will be spent doing various activities to monitor fish population within the basin.

*Duties and Responsibilities:\ *Assist with multiple research projects aimed at restoring various fish populations in the Kootenai River in northern Idaho. Primary responsibilities will be winter hoop netting for Burbot in the mainstem Kootenai and tributaries of the Kootenai. Additional responsibilities may include boat electrofishing, maintaining a passive array of sonic telemetry receivers, a remote PIT tag antenna, and various maintenance of sampling equipment. This position requires trailering and operating boats and working outside in inclement weather conditions during the winter months.

This is a non-benefitted position at 40 hours per week. Various housing options are available for free or reduced rent.

*Minimum Qualifications:\ *College coursework toward BS degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Biology, or related field is preferred. Applicants should have some knowledge of life history, anatomy, and ecology of various fish species, operating a motorboat, recording field data, and using programs such as Microsoft Word, Access, and Excel. A valid drivers license. Although experience diagnosing and repairing minor mechanical problems with outboard motors or generators is not required, it is preferred. Extended travel may be required at times to remote locations for fish sampling operations. The applicant MUST be able to legally enter Canada, meaning that the applicant must not possess felony convictions. Qualification to enter Canada can be found at the link below. This position will involve working in cold, inclement weather conditions for up to 10 hours per shift and possibly lifting and carrying equipment weighing up to 60-80 pounds for short distances.
