Packaging Engineer

Summary
This role supports production and packaging design efforts of The JR Simplot Company Global Food Group. This position supports packaging design, establishment of written packaging specifications, and testing and qualification of packaging materials. Supports food service and retail customers through a focus on operational ability and continuous improvement to utilize materials efficiently as well as through a partnership with procurement to acquire materials which optimize quality, efficiency and costs.
Key Responsibilities
Responsible for the packaging materials portion of our internet-based specification system for all required types of packaging for plant locations throughout our North America and LATAM regions.
Works directly with Senior Packaging Engineers and plant locations to specify primary and secondary packaging materials to protect the finished product while maximizing packaging efficiency with the equipment, as well as optimizing use of warehouse space and transportation modes.
Works in alignment with Procurement and plant locations to qualify new suppliers and/or new or alternate materials.
Participates on teams for new product concepts and provides packaging material specifications and product design recommendations.
Provides support to Marketing and R&D for new and existing products. Attends and assists with packaging trials and production runs as necessary.
Typical Education
- Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.S.) from 4-year college or university
Relevant Experience
5+ years related experience and/or training
Experience/knowledge covering all aspects related to packaging material structures and packaging equipment.
Understanding of factory operations and packaging equipment to transfer a theoretical application into real-world production. Experience creating and maintaining of packaging technical specifications within online specification management system.
Excellent communication skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team, and ability to maintain a positive working relationship with individuals in operations, procurement, marketing, R&D, and senior management
Relevant Certifications
Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) or
Certified Professionals in Training (CPIT)
