Safety Analysis Engineer- Corporate- Birmingham

The position is responsible for performance and oversight of engineering and technical products associated with design and licensing basis hazards, accidents, and safety analyses for the SNC fleet. These analyses are conducted to demonstrate the plants operate within acceptable safety limits and design margins following design and licensing basis events. Types of analyses include evaluations of containment response, radiological releases, and transient analyses associated with assumed accidents and events to ensure compliance. This position will actively engage with SNC and industry peers in the development of solutions to generic technical issues as they relate to the fleet's accident and safety analyses. This position is located at the SNC Corporate Office and will report to the Safety Analysis Manager in the Risk Informed Engineering organization.

The work includes but is not limited to compiling, analyzing, and interpreting data, and performing and managing tasks and projects as part of our engineering team. This position requires an individual to be a self-starter, organized, able to prioritize multiple tasks, and to have strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. The person needs to be flexible, and work well in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performing nuclear safety analyses and hazards calculations (radiological, dose, pressure-temperature transients, hydrogen generation, flooding, etc.) (UFSAR Chapter 6 & 15).

  • Technical oversight of nuclear safety analyses and hazards calculations performed by external suppliers.

  • Assisting Nuclear Fuels by ensuring technical accuracy and verification of SNC fleet core reload licensing inputs (OPL-3, OPL-4, FRED, and RSLC).

  • Providing engineering reviews for compliance with existing and new regulations.

  • Supporting preparation of NRC submittals and licensing document updates related to safety analysis scope.

  • Providing technical oversight of the resolution to NSSS vendor notifications (Technical Bulletins, Nuclear Service Advisory Letters, and Service Information Letters, Safety Communications, etc.) relative to accident analyses.

  • Monitoring and influencing emerging safety analysis issues to ensure SNC is appropriately positioned to resolve; interfacing with external groups such as NRC, INPO, NEI, PWROG, BWROG, EPRI, and ANS.

  • Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university. Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering degree is preferred.

  • Advanced degree in Engineering is highly preferred.

  • PE License and other specialty certifications highly preferred.

Background/Experience Requirements:

  • At least 5 years of work experience in engineering in the nuclear industry, 8 years preferred.

  • Work experience associated with the systems, design, and analysis of nuclear power plants. Work experience with the AP1000 plant design is preferred.

  • Must be able to solve problems and make sound engineering judgments, based on experience and proper application of good engineering practices.

  • Prior performance of safety analyses and nuclear hazards calculations is strongly preferred.

  • Experience with industry computer programs used in performing nuclear hazards and safety analyses such as GOTHIC, RELAP, RETRAN, RADTRAD, MICROSHIELD, ORIGEN, MCNP, GRODEC, etc. is preferred.

  • Knowledge of nuclear plant Safety Analysis Reports (FSARs), Technical Specifications and site procedures, with emphasis on FSAR Chapters 6 and 15 is preferred.

  • Experience leading small to mid-sized technical projects is desired.

  • Must be able to work independently and in team settings on specific tasks, and to prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Typically work independently to uncover and resolve complex technical issues at the system level.

  • Must exhibit an exceptional degree of technical expertise, creativity, and involved in planning and coordinating projects that deal with unique or controversial problems.

  • Continues to demonstrate ability to make independent prudent decisions; critical decision making ability to assess risk at multiple levels and understand the consequences and impact of actions; at times, act in the capacity of a consultant to management for technology planning.
