The Surgical Pathology Technologist performs gross description of non-complex surgical specimens.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the preparation and performance of surgical specimen examinations which includes: Responsibility for assuring correct accessioning and numbering of all surgical specimens. Gross description of surgical specimens. Prepares specimens for gross dissection by Pathologist/Pathologist Assistant.. Select and prepare tissue for microscope examination (preparation of frozen and permanent sections for light microscopy) . Responsibility for accessioning and processing surgical cases for send out.
Use voice-activated transcription system to dictate gross description.
PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Standing up to six (6) hours/day in two-hour increments. Sitting up to 6 hours/day in 2-hour increments. Frequent fingering and handling to manipulate surgical specimens. Lifting of up to 200 pounds (with assistance) to move bodies. Stoop occasionally. Bend frequently. Reach above shoulder level occasionally. Must be able to feel size, shape and texture of specimens. Hear normal conversation. See normal vision, color vision and read from computer monitor.
EDUCATION:
Associate degree in biologic or chemical science.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Medical terminology, 2-3 years laboratory experience.
