JOB SUMMARY
The attorney in this role must understand complex regulatory expectations and relevant laws impacting an ethics and compliance program, staying updated on changes in these areas. They must proactively drive the development and implementation of a strategic communications, awareness, and training program as part of Marriott’s Ethics & Compliance program.
The Senior Legal Counsel will provide leadership, organizational influence, and strategic direction in key risk areas such as ethical conduct, advising senior leaders on Marriott’s Business Conduct Guide, ethics and compliance training and communication, antitrust and competition law, anti-money laundering, and conflicts of interest.
Additionally, the Senior Legal Counsel may support the Global Compliance program in areas like anti-corruption and anti-bribery (including the FCPA and UK Bribery Act), economic and trade sanctions (including OFAC), gifts and entertainment, third-party due diligence, and other critical areas as designated by the General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer.
CANDIDATE PROFILE
Education and Experience
Required
Minimum of 12 years’ legal experience in a role related to Ethics and Compliance and the key risk areas above, preferably supporting a global ethics and compliance program
Excellent academic records with a law degree (J.D.) from an accredited law school
Admission to the Bar and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills (PowerPoint skills a plus)
Preferred
Demonstrated record leading the identification, investigation, and remediation of ethics and compliance challenges
Experience interacting with government agencies having jurisdiction over compliance risk areas, especially the U.S. Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission
Experience providing advice and counsel on compliance matters, including anti-money laundering and antitrust and competition law matters, with a focus on individual integrity and principled business conduct
Experience leading investigations into allegations of misconduct related to ethics and compliance matters
Proficient with data analytics and visualization (e.g., PowerBI)
CORE WORK ACTIVITIES
The Senior Legal Counsel will have the following primary responsibilities:
Lead projects and matters related to the overall Ethics & Global Compliance program by identifying ethics and legal compliance issues of material concern and work with leadership to identify appropriate direction and courses of action
Proactively support Marriott’s culture of integrity by driving the effectiveness and continued development of Marriott’s Business Conduct Guide
Lead Marriott’s ethics and compliance training and awareness program, including by measuring training effectiveness, developing new and updated courses in ethics and compliance risk areas, working collaboratively with other groups at Marriott to implement trainings, and supporting a comprehensive, global communications plan to drive awareness and positive action regarding ethics and compliance topics
Oversee Marriott’s antitrust and competition law compliance program
Oversee Marriott’s anti-money laundering compliance program
Independently monitor current and evolving statutes, regulations, and case law and help to identify urgent legal issues of critical importance in a global business environment, including the interpretation of regulations and case law to advise stakeholders on practical implications and implementation
Lead the development, drafting, and maintenance of policies, standards and procedures in the key risk areas and work cross-functionally with stakeholders to integrate these policy requirements into global operations
Oversee investigations into allegations of misconduct related to the key risk areas and partner with key stakeholders
Lead various aspects of the ethics and legal compliance risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies
Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders related to the key risk areas
Lead presentations and develop and conduct training on the key risk areas
Develop and implement strategies to monitor and assess the effectiveness of compliance activities in the key risk areas
Maintain strong coordination, cooperation and mutual support between the Law Department and Internal Audit, Finance, Internal Investigations, Government Affairs, Human Resources, and the regional Ethics and Global Compliance Councils
Respond to government investigations or queries as appropriate and/or required
The Senior Legal Counsel should also be available for global business travel as needed.
The salary range for this position is $177,100 to $288,300 annually.
