Purpose of Position
The purpose of an Ammonia Technician is to maintain and operate ammonia systems in commercial and industrial environments. This includes inspecting, testing, repairing and replacing components, monitoring and controlling levels of ammonia, and ensuring all safety protocols are adhered to. This individual must have a good understanding of the regulations and requirements surrounding ammonia handling and storage, as well as the relevant safety procedures. In addition, they must have a good knowledge of the systems and components used to operate and maintain the ammonia systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine maintenance, repairs, safety checks, inspections, modifications and upgrades on ammonia refrigeration systems
- Troubleshoot and diagnose faults on ammonia refrigeration systems
- Install, test and commission ammonia refrigeration systems
- Coordinate and supervise the activities of contractors performing work on the ammonia refrigeration system and other pieces of equipment related to the ammonia system.
- Oversee the boiler treatment program and boiler inspections.
- Prepare parts lists and purchase requisitions
- Make accurate, clear, complete and concise reports
- Keep records on all work done and any equipment inspections performed.
- Complete forms such as contractor time sheets, parts used from inventory log, and work orders.
- Prepares draft RFE descriptions for the Ammonia and Boiler systems.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance procedures on all plant equipment including refrigeration equipment and fill out all the associated paperwork.
- Dismantle, inspect, repair and re-assemble any standard machine or equipment item commonly used in the department.
- Proficiently utilize calipers, feelers, micrometers, etc. to perform chemical tests on water from the boiler to ensure correct operation. Coordinates predictive testing on the ammonia system.
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings of machines and equipment. Redline modifications to existing drawings and manage updates.
- Perform various other duties as needed or as assigned.
Key Skills and Experience
- High School Diploma or GED required
- 5 years experience with ammonia refrigeration in the food industry is required
- Refrigeration certifications are a plus
- Knowledge of operating and troubleshooting ammonia refrigeration systems
- Knowledge of ammonia safety regulations
- Ability to read and interpret ammonia piping diagrams
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Understanding of Health and Safety regulations
- Ability to read technical manuals and understand technical drawings
