Amazon Software Development Manager, Event Outfitters Engineering in Austin, Texas

Description

In this role, you and your team will manage one of the largest fleets of AWS Accounts in existence in scalable and secure way, supporting the broader AWS Field in enabling both internal and external customers. This role will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to solve problems at scale and how to effectively own a critical service that is a dependency for other teams.

Our team owns services that thousands of AWS Solutions Architects (SAs) use to work efficiently and securely with hundreds of thousands of customers. We are looking for a Software Development Manager to lead a team of engineers who own our account management operations. Our ideal candidate is passionate about owning large-scale services that focus on giving customers what they want: high quality, highly usable, always-on services. You’re happiest when you’re leading empowered highly capable engineers to deliver great customer experience. You are passionate about growing your team to meet new challenges and working with other AWS Service teams to work through large, complex problems.

As a Software Development Manager you will work closely with a diverse and talented team of engineers and product managers to ideate, build, operate, and scale, impactful customer facing features across the full product development lifecycle. You will leverage your experience and unique skills to grow engineers individual careers, and deliver impactful projects to our customers. You are open to learning new skills, growing your career, being mentored, and mentoring others. You’ll collaborate with people and other Service Teams across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security. This individual will be able to understand complex problems and identify areas where they will need to have their team invest, to ensure they are able to support the anticipated growth and future requirements of the service. Maturity, judgment, communication skills, negotiation skills and influencing skills are all essential as you will interact with cross-functional teams worldwide.

Key job responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, mentor, and manage teams of software engineers.

  • Foster career growth and a strong team culture.

  • Interface with the product manager and internal customers to understand requirements, set priorities, and communicate direction and progress.

  • Own the operational health of your team’s software

  • Manage the agile development process and methodology to deliver tech requirements on time and with a high-degree of precision and quality.

  • Coordinate with stakeholders in other groups, drive alignment across multiple orgs on shared goals and initiatives

  • Make long term org design decisions, architectural decisions.

  • Help develop long-term business and technology strategies.

  • Drive improvements in software engineering practices.

About the team

Our team owns builds tools/services that allow the AWS field to securely, and efficiently deliver technical content and hands on events to customers. We work with AWS Event Marketing to support all large events such as re:Invent, re:Inforce, and Summits, as well as other internal teams to help support other technical content creation aspects. Our team is mostly centered in Texas, however we have folks in other locations and from a number of backgrounds / experience. We're always looking for more folks to help us improve and continue delivering an awesome experience for both internal and external customers!

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
