Job Summary:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR), including key messages, goals, metrics and outreach tactics/channels.

  • Promote the mission, vision, resources, services and expertise of the OVCR to internal campus audiences with a focus on the CU Anschutz research community and OVCR staff members.

  • Coordinate content strategy across all OVCR departments to ensure cohesive, effective communications to the campus research community.

  • Oversee the OVCR's digital marketing strategy, including department email newsletters and website content/design.

  • Manage the personnel responsible for maintaining all OVCR department websites, ensuring regular updates and ongoing site optimization.

  • Oversee internal communications to OVCR employees, developing and implementing a strategy that builds a culture of collaboration in alignment with the office mission.

  • Oversee OVCR and central research communications to the faculty and broader CU Anschutz research community.

  • Direct special event communications and messaging, including town halls, awards ceremonies, campus forums, the State of Research Address, etc.

  • Support internal and external executive communications from the Vice Chancellor for Research, coordinating content for speeches, presentations, social media, elected official outreach, email newsletters, staff communiques, etc. Coordinate with the Office of Communications to identify key scientific discoveries and successes; collaborate with their team to help promote the impact and value of CU Anschutz research enterprise to external audiences.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree in marketing, public relations, communications, business administration or a directly related field from an accredited institution.

  • The position requires at least 6 years of extensive, diverse and progressively responsible experience, including direct responsibility for developing and executing strategic communications plans and managing multiple communication projects.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree

  • 10+ years of diverse and progressive marketing/communications experience, preferably in a university setting and/or a field related to higher education, healthcare or scientific research.

  • Experience managing internal/executive communication programs.

  • Experience developing and implementing digital content strategy across multiple teams/departments and distribution platforms.

  • Past work in academic medical center or academic research administration setting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Able to manage a diverse workload with multiple competing priorities and stakeholder needs; strong follow through and response with colleagues and projects with sensitivity to timelines and deadlines.

  • Ability to present and communicate ideas, concepts and constructive criticism appropriately and purposefully.

  • Deep knowledge of brand and digital marketing best practices (i.e., email, web, social media, design)

  • Outstanding interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills

  • Self-starter who can work independently as well as part of a larger, interconnected team.

The CU Anschutz Office of Communications is looking for a collaborative, creative and strategic senior leader with experience in communications, marketing and digital strategy. The Director will work with research leadership and campus partners to manage communications and marketing for the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) at CU Anschutz. The Director will provide executive communications support to the Vice Chancellor for Research, developing strategies to communicate his/her vision and voice to multiple audiences. The Director will also oversee communications strategy for departments within the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, implementing outreach tactics that advance awareness of the office's mission, vision and role in supporting the campus research enterprise. The director will focus on communications internally within the units of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (OVCR) and from the OVCR to the campus. They will also collaborate with the CU Anschutz Office of Communications on efforts to promote and disseminate campus research activities externally.

Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.
