Who We Are

Utilities is a division of Facilities and Operations, made up of 135 dedicated employees responsible for providing utilities services for the university 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Services include campus-wide utilities purchasing, generation, and distribution, as well as metering and billing energy consumption for all university buildings. Distribution includes the operations and maintenance of 300 miles of underground utility systems from outdoor lighting and high voltage circuits to water mains to tunnel piping. The division also provides a wide range of engineering services primarily dedicated to energy management, the operations and maintenance of university facilities, and the utilities infrastructure.

Responsibilities*

  • Assist in the operation of boilers, chillers, turbines, generators, cooling towers, deionizers, softeners, etc. as needed.

  • Perform inspections on equipment under control of the power plant group in a given section of the campus to insure equipment is in good operating order documenting same or needed repairs.

  • Perform and monitor repairs to equipment along with the mechanic assigned to that area.

  • Perform analysis and treatment of feed water, boiler water, service water, and effluents to meet required standards.

  • Perform routine and non-routine maintenance or adjustments to building HVAC equipment, controls, and filters.

  • Troubleshoot problems using a variety of test equipment.

  • Take appropriate action to insure safety of personnel and protection of property as indicated by Fire and Mechanical alarm systems, security, etc. as need arises.

  • Maintain adequate inventory of materials and supplies for assigned areas and request replenishment of materials and supplies when required.

Required Qualifications*

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • City of Detroit Third Class Stationary Engineer's License and City of Detroit Third Class Refrigeration Operators License, or the ability to obtain both within 6 months.

  • Two (2) years experience working with high pressure boilers, steam and gas turbines, generators, and refrigeration equipment.

  • Some experience with computers, controls, electrical distribution systems, HVAC, and facility management control systems, Windows, Microsoft Office, and Excel software, Google Suite, some experience safely trouble shooting electrical problems, welding, and pipefitting.

  • Must be able to perform the full range of duties, with or without a reasonable accommodation, in the classification in an environment that has high levels of heat and noise. This position constantly positions self to service and repair powerhouse equipment traversing under and over obstacles, ascends/descends ladders to service and repair powerhouse equipment, and routinely moves powerhouse equipment and materials weighing up to 50lbs.

  • Thorough knowledge of all University safety standards and procedures is desired.

  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion in relationships with others is necessary.

Work Schedule

Following the initial training period, this position will be a 12-hour midnight shift.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the International Union of Operating Engineers, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
