Position Summary
The Cook at Hillcrest Children's Center is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious, age-appropriate meals and snacks for children in compliance with the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) guidelines. The Cook plays a vital role in supporting the health and well-being of children, ensuring that meals meet dietary requirements and are served in a safe, sanitary, and inviting manner.
Key Responsibilities
- Meal Preparation and Planning
:
- Plan and prepare meals and snacks in accordance with CACFP guidelines and the center's approved menus.
- Accommodate special dietary needs, allergies, and preferences, as documented by parents or medical professionals.
- Ensure meals are age-appropriate, appealing, and nutritionally balanced.
- Food Safety and Sanitation
:
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen in compliance with local, state, and federal health and safety regulations.
- Follow proper food storage, preparation, and handling procedures to prevent contamination.
- Conduct regular cleaning of kitchen equipment, utensils, and surfaces.
- Inventory and Budget Management
:
- Monitor and maintain an adequate inventory of food and supplies.
- Order groceries and supplies as needed, staying within budget constraints.
- Conduct inventory checks and rotate stock to minimize waste.
- Compliance and Documentation
:
- Complete required CACFP documentation, including meal production records, attendance sheets, and food purchasing receipts.
- Participate in CACFP training and audits as required.
- Collaboration and Communication
:
- Work closely with the center's staff to ensure meal service aligns with program schedules.
- Communicate effectively with families and staff regarding food-related matters, such as allergy accommodations.

Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Experience in food preparation, preferably in a child care or educational setting.
- Familiarity with CACFP guidelines and meal pattern requirements (preferred).
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices, with current food handler certification or willingness to obtain.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Physical ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, stand for extended periods, and perform tasks in a kitchen setting.
- Must pass State and Federal Background with fingerprinting to work in Licensed Child Care Program.
