The Department of Computer Science (https://www.albany.edu/computer-science) , within the College of Nanotechnology, Science, and Engineering (CNSE) is seeking applicants for a PRODiG+ Postdoctoral Fellowship. A Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate is needed to assist the principal investigator with research in CS education. The Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate is expected to develop new teaching pedagogies and to write up and publish their results in high-impact journals and conferences, in collaboration with the PI.

Primary Responsibilities:

Develop initiatives to recruit, support, encourage, and retain Computer Science (CS) students from underrepresented groups, including female students, under-represented minorities (URM), and students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

  • Explore root causes of difficulties that make success harder for such students

  • Develop mentoring strategies and initiatives to overcome such difficulties

  • Develop peer-mentoring support systems for such students

Find, design, develop, and disseminate instructional pedagogies to support underrepresented groups

  • Provide specific activities, both in and out of the classroom, for faculty and GTAs to use

  • Provide knowledge support to existing faculty to support inclusive classrooms

  • Train GTAs in actions they can take to enable inclusive classrooms

Develop a self-sustaining undergraduate Learning Assistant (LA) program to support CS courses

  • Develop a process to identify and recruit top undergraduate students to become LAs

  • Develop a training program for LAs that emphasizes diversity in the classroom

  • Develop policies for which activities LAs can and cannot do to support classroom teachers

Design, develop, and deliver an undergraduate course in object-oriented programming

  • The course should sit between introductory programming (CSI 201) and data structures (CSI 213)

  • The course pedagogy should use documented inclusive techniques such as active classroom activities, collaborative programming, auto-grading, and separation of practice from assessment

  • The course should be developed in close collaboration with the curriculum committee and current instructors of introductory CS courses

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Computer Science or related field from an accredited institution completed before start date

  • Demonstrated knowledge of introductory programming and data structures

  • Be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship

  • Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community. Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly track record focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching low-level CS courses such as introductory programming, object-oriented programming, and data structures

  • Evidence of research in CS and software engineering education

Preference will be given to candidates who are:

  • Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows.

  • From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first- generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.
