Summary All hourly jobs are considered as open for bid on a continuous basis. Responsibilities As a HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR you will: Operate large electric, gasoline, or diesel-powered cranes (2-ton and higher rated capacity) with attachments for loading, unloading, hoisting into position (for erection, assembly, or installation), and retirement of heavy equipment and materials. Operate earth moving equipment including, but not limited to, backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, skid-steer, road graders, and dump trucks with tilt trailer combinations. Operate equipment in the construction and maintenance of substation yards, roads and transmission line rights-of-way. Operates equipment to grade stakes or levels. Operate forklifts, bucket trucks, hydraulic cranes, and other material and manlift equipment. Set platforms, mats, or other materials required for movement and operation of crawler cranes and mobile cranes. Perform daily inspection of equipment to ensure safety of operation. Performs daily minor or preventative maintenance, service, and lubrication, as needed. Arranges for maintenance or repair when needed. Make minor repairs to, adjustments, and attachment changes as required to accommodate the work at hand. Drive truck-mounted cranes and dump trucks on public highways from job to job. May be assigned incidental tasks to assist in project completion. Keep required records and logs. Prepares required daily/monthly inspection reports and submits with monthly mileage to Heavy Equipment Operator Foreman II within five (5) working days of the end of each month. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work requires extensive travel throughout the BPA service area with considerable changes of temporary duty stations. Work is normally performed outdoors in all types of weather and includes travel on all road conditions. Work may be performed on steep, hilly terrain or soft unstable ground. Incumbents are frequently required to install or remove equipment in energized high-voltage yards. Working conditions may expose employee to falling objects. Hazards include working around energized equipment and equipment with moving or rotating parts, and exposure to dust, grease, oil and other debris. The work environment will occasionally include high noise levels or exposure to hazardous materials (e.g., mercury, acids, solvents, PCBs, etc.) that could, if precautions are not followed and personal protective equipment are not worn, pose a health risk. At times, work may be physically demanding. Emergencies, critical system conditions, or outage limitations may require that work be done at night or under time pressures. System priorities may require extended periods of overtime including working weekends. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Operates all sizes and types of heavy mobile and stationary cranes and other equipment such as graders, bobcats, backhoes, bulldozers and track hoes. Operates earth-moving equipment such as road graders, backhoes, bulldozers, power shovels, bobcats, ditch-witchs, dump trucks, and tilt trailer combinations. Operates forklifts, bucket trucks, hydro cranes, and other material and manlift equipment. Operates a variety of track-and-wheel-type gasoline or diesel-powered tractors. Completes associated documentation required of the above listed tasks. Drives 30 % of the time, depending upon location, in all weather conditions. Travels over rough, uneven and steep terrain. "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
