Bonneville Power Administration Electrical Utility Materials Handler Trainee 5 in Vancouver, Washington

Summary All hourly jobs are considered as open for bid on a continuous basis. Responsibilities As an Electrical Utility Materials Trainee 5, you will: The Electrical Utility Materials Handler Trainee, under direct supervision of an Electrical Utility Materials Handler or appropriate foreman, is given assignments which will train the individual in accomplishment of handling materials, supplies, parts, tools, and equipment involved in the construction and maintenance of an electrical transmission system. Duties performed depend upon the size and nature of the warehouse, stock activity, and/or material yard. The trainee is expected to gain knowledge of the various work processes with progressively difficult assignments throughout their training program. During the eight steps of the training program, the trainee will learn the following: General Orientation: Obtain general knowledge of Bonneville Power Administration and the materials handling function. Utilization and Disposal: Includes material identification, material refurbishment, and disposal and transfer methods. Storage and Issue: Verification of stock numbers, identification and nomenclature, storage of materials, issue methods and procedure, physical inventory, use of applicable computer output, renovation, and effects of time, the elements, and technological advances on material in storage. Receiving: Includes unloading, nomenclature and identification, documentation, uncrating, inspection, sorting, quality assurance, and computer system operation. Shipping: Includes packing and crating, authorization, nomenclature and identification, material selection, documentation, and computer system operation. Hazardous & Toxic Materials Handling: Includes hazardous material handling, unloading hazardous materials, preparation of hazardous materials for disposal, and procedures for handling hazardous material spills. Cross Training: Includes assignments within the Parts Room, Switchboard Shop, and General Shops. Requirements Conditions of Employment After employment, this position may be subject to periodic physical examinations, as prescribed by competent medical authority and at BPA expense, if exposed to health hazards. You must answer all of these questions completely and truthfully. Satisfactory completion of each step is mandatory for advancement to the next step. Failure of any of two of the step examinations will result in removal from the trainee program. Become familiar with and follow the safety practices of the BPA Accident Prevention Manual and OSHA regulations applicable to this position. If exposed to health hazards, have periodic physical examinations as prescribed by competent medical authority at BPA expense. (Employees may work in close proximity to substances, such as asbestos, acids, PCB'S, pesticides, mercury, solvents, etc., which may have effect on health unless prescribed handling procedures are followed.) Subject to call for emergency work at any time. Obtain a non-electrical worker permit within 30 days after appointment. Within one year after appointment be certified for First Aid and CPR and maintain certification. Obtain certification for operation of motorized equipment, e.g., pickup, flatbed, or van-type truck, forklift, or overhead crane. Be able to wear protective apparel such as respirators when required for worker safety. Position is subject to initial pre-employment Drug Testing and random drug testing thereafter. This position requires a pre-employment medical exam, at BPA expense, prior to appointment due to the physical requirements of the position. Possess a valid state driver's license. Possess a U.S. Motor Vehicle operator authorization or obtain within 30 days after appointment. Traffic citations indicating poor driving habits may disqualify applicants. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors under prevailing weather conditions. Some work includes travel on freeways, county roads, and city streets. Hazards include working around high voltage equipment; machinery with moving parts; and exposure to dust, grease, oil, and other miscellaneous debris. Work may be required at various heights, such as from scaffolding, overhead cranes, and ladders at heights to 20 feet. The work environment will occasionally include high noise levels or exposure to hazardous substances (asbestos, acids, PCB'S, pesticides, mercury, solvents, etc.) that could pose a health risks if precautions are not followed. Proper respiratory apparatus and protective apparel shall be worn when hazardous substances are being handled. PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Incumbent must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential duties of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others.
